Tell Me More!
In the half century or so since the world was first described as a Global Village our interconnections with the rest of the planet have become ever easier, and ever faster.
But...
Have we got to know each other? Have we developed a deeper sense of community as a result of these technological changes?
Kafka once suggested that a single human life may be too short for the journey from one village to another, let alone the globe itself.
Nevertheless, in this series we are going to try to get to know our new neighbours; we will look at the ways in which the global meets the local, in which issues of concern in the developing world also concern us here in the UK and Ireland; we will try to gain some insight into life in
The Next Village.
Over the course of this radio series we will examine issues such as climate change, poverty reduction, the rise of China and other new powers
(though 'new', as we will see, is hardly the word here) global gender issues, and life after Empire in Africa and India.
Some of these issues - climate change, poverty reduction, gender - feature among the Millennium Development Goals, a set of targets the UN aims to achieve by 2015. Here and in the seasons to come we will loosely weave themes from the MDGs through the programmes, building, by the UN's target date, a library of resources, a diorama of current thinking on these questions.
And along the way we will begin a conversation with our global neighbours, beginning to learn about them - perhaps, indeed and learning from each other about our place in this shared world.
